SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (UMNS) - The United Methodist Council of Bishops observed the National Day of Prayer, May 3, by praying for two of their church's best-known members: President George W. Bush and Vice President Richard Cheney.

More than 100 bishops from the United States, Africa, Europe and the Philippines pledged to continue praying for the two men "that they might be blessed with wisdom, patience and the direction of the Holy Spirit. We pray that they will lead the people of the United States in seeking to live out the highest principles of our religious and political heritage."

The bishops sent a statement to the White House assuring the two men of "our deepest concern for them, their families and the United States."
